Frustration at 48kHz

Sweet baby Jesus, it’s a frustrating matter. Two frustrating matters. The first just came to me as I started this entry. Our upstairs neighbor. She’s a teacher, which means at this time of year she’s out of the house for most of the day, but as soon as she comes home, she stomps non-stop. “But why don’t you live on the third floor?” Because we have a 14 year old Shih Tzu with arthritis and supreme fear of heights. Carrying him down the stairs 4 or 5 times a day is difficult enough from the second floor. “Okay, then why don’t you just get a house?” BECAUSE I BARELY WORK AND AM HAVING TROUBLE FINDING A SECOND JOB, KAREN!!

No, but seriously…I am a filmmaker on a small scale with aspirations of moving on to bigger and better things. But I probably can’t do that until I figure out how to properly record audio from an external source and sync it up to video. Here’s the breakdown:

Video was recorded on a GoPro Hero 6. Format: 4K. FPS: 30 (frames per second)

Audio was recorded with my podcast setup. A Behringer Uphoria UMC404HD interface, Shure SM58 mic, Reaper software, sample rate: 48kHz (kilohertz). Also exported and rendered at 48khz.

The specs of the project in Final Cut all match: 30fps, 4k, 48khz sample rate. So it should all perfectly match up with no problems, right?

YA WRONG, BITCH!

When it came time to sit down and edit it all together, the audio drifts out of sync with the video. at around the 30 second mark. Which is unrealistically frustrating because it. always. happens. I’ve tried every thing, guys. Also-fucking-lutely everything.

I’ve tried every single combination of every single spec my equipment’s capable of. 24fps, 30fps, 60fps, 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 1080p, 1080i, 4k…every possible permutation, every possible set up or my tascam, t6i rebel, u-phoria 404, GoPro, Sony Action Cam and even my goddamn iPhone. Never. Not once, y’all. The audio has never not drifted out of sync from the video. It’s maddening. It more than doubles the time it takes to edit anything, because you have to go in and shift everything to make the original audio, and it fucking sucks. So I’m here, in my blog, spewing a diary-ah of complaints, because iI’ve been dealing with this issue for 6 months, and I can’t find any sort of answer or help online, and I’m not sure who else to ask. But…IT SUCKS FAT WIENERS GUYS.

And now I’m gonna go try to figure it out. Again. for the 27th time. Thank you for listening and letting me vent. I feel……..not at all better.
